Advice
- Write (even if they don’t write back)
- Don’t ask them if they’re homesick
- Expect change
- Do not tell your student that “These are the best years of your life”
- Ask questions (but not too many) and don’t overreact
- Don’t worry too much about stressed-out phone calls or letters
- Encourage your students to stay on campus during the weekends!
- Visit (but not too often)
- Encourage your student to get involved on campus
- Trust them
- Encourage your student to take the initiative to solve his/her problems
- Set some boundaries and expectations for your student
- Talk to your student about credit cards
- Don’t allow your student to leave Georgetown at mid-semester
- Talk to your student about alcohol
- Be aware of signs of depression (see the resources section)

- Be aware of Georgetown’s resources and refer your student if necessary
