Advice

  • Write (even if they don’t write back)
  • Don’t ask them if they’re homesick
  • Expect change
  • Do not tell your student that “These are the best years of your life”
  • Ask questions (but not too many) and don’t overreact
  • Don’t worry too much about stressed-out phone calls or letters
  • Encourage your students to stay on campus during the weekends!
  • Visit (but not too often)
  • Encourage your student to get involved on campus
  • Trust them
  • Encourage your student to take the initiative to solve his/her problems
  • Set some boundaries and expectations for your student
  • Talk to your student about credit cards
  • Don’t allow your student to leave Georgetown at mid-semester
  • Talk to your student about alcohol
  • Be aware of signs of depression (see the resources section)

  • Be aware of Georgetown’s resources and refer your student if necessary
