A Very Long Engagement

Event starts: Mon, 11/13/2017 - 7:00pm

Foundations 111 instructors will be showing movies throughout the fall on Monday evenings which are related in some way to course readings or the course theme:  "What does it mean to be human?"  This week's movie is "A Very Long Engagement"-the story of a woman's attempt to discover what happened to her fiance during World War I.  The movie pairs well with Hemingway's "A Natural History of the Dead" and Virginia Woolf's "The Mark on the Wall."  Both short stories were written against the backdrop of World War I, and the movie offers a chance to learn how the horrors of this war shaped our understanding of what it means to be human.
