Visit to Frankfort, KY

On Wednesday, the IEP took a trip to the capital of Kentucky, Frankfort.

We first went to the Capitol Annex and met with state Representative Ryan Quarles. So we approached the capitol from the back (seen here). Idiom of the day: “Get in through the back door.” Rep. Quarles also taught us “thick-skinned” which is what one has to be when one is a politician whose name sounds like “quarrels.”

But before we went to the capital, we opened bank accounts here in Georgetown. Pedro practiced his cornhole skills while we waited. He’s really good! (He calls the game “Green Bay Packers” for some reason.) I hope we can start the first international cornhole team in Georgetown College history.

Only in Kentucky can you play cornhole in the bank lobby.

We were invited to watch a session of the House of Representatives. Representative Quarles showed us his desk. Each representative’s desk has four buttons: Yea, Nay, Page, and Spk. “Yea” and “Nay” are for voting yes or no. The “page” button is to call a page for a glass of water (or whatever they serve in session). The “Spk” button is used when the rep. wants to speak. You cannot get Facebook on the computers — they only show bills that are being considered and other House business. There is wifi though, so reps. can tweet from the floor.

What a fun day! I learned at least as much as the students. It was quite an adventure to go to the representative’s offices, visit with Rep. Quarles, tour the capitol (I hope to have some pictures of Pedro giving a “press conference” there soon; mine didn’t turn out.), and see a session of the house.
