English majors and minors at Georgetown College will discover that there are many ways to augment their study of language, literature, and writing through extracurricular activities.
The honor society for those interested in literature and writing is Sigma Tau Delta, advised by Dr. Holly Barbaccia (ext. 8126). Meetings and events are open to everyone; official membership in the Eta Alpha chapter requires students to meet the national organization’s criteria.
The campus literary journal associated with the Eta Alpha chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, Inscape, publishes writing by students and is student-edited. Contact Dr. Steve Carter (ext. 8308) for more information about Inscape.
For those who want to develop their writing skills, there is no better route to involvement than The Georgetonian, the student newspaper. Participation is open to all students on campus. Anyone interested in becoming involved should call The Georgetonian office at (502) 863-8150 or contact the faculty advisor, Jamie Ratliff (Jamie_Ratliff@georgetowncollege.edu).
Many English majors become tutors. Students who would like to apply to tutor at the Writing Center should contact Dr. Sadlon (John_Sadlon@georgetowncollege.edu). Students interested in applying and training to become peer tutors for literature survey classes should contact Dr. Barbaccia.
Finally, those wishing to enhance their academic experience in and outside of the classroom will want to learn more about the Honors Program (Dr. Barbara Burch, Director). Qualified students are encouraged to apply.
