The Master of Arts in Education with Initial Certification (MAIC) provides initial teaching certification in a specific content area at the middle or high school levels and/or certification at all grade levels for art, music, and world languages. If you have a┬ábachelorÔÇÖs degree in a certifiable content major (areas in table below or closely related areas), you can begin your path to becoming a classroom teacher today!
MAIC programs provide two routes to teaching: traditional and alternative:
Traditional Route Program: This 38-hour program leads to teacher certification for Bachelor’s degree holders with a certifiable major (such as Biological Science, Chemistry, English, Mathematics, Physics, Social Studies), who typically have little background in Education coursework. Choose from a wide range of certification areas, building on your personal interests and bachelor’s level educational background. The program is designed so working adults can maintain employment during their studies.
Alternative Route (Option 6) Program:┬áThis 36-hour program is designed for those under temporary provisional certificates, who hold a Bachelor’s degree with a certifiable major (such as Biological Science, Chemistry, English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Physics, Social Studies) If you are interested in teaching in a high-need area, consider this┬á program. Due to a lack of certified teachers in┬ácertain areas, such as science and math, some schools are┬áwilling to hire candidates who have a bachelorÔÇÖs degree in the content area and are enrolled in an alternative certification program under a temporary provisional certificate. These candidates are employed in schools during their studies.
Whichever route you choose, our Master of Arts in Education provides initial teaching certification options in the following areas:
