Teacher Leader MA – Reading/Writing Endorsement (P-12)
The Teacher Leader Master of Arts with Reading/Writing program consists of 15 hours of core professional education courses and 18 hours that are specific to the specialty area, for a total of 33 hours. The 15 hour core includes an initial course in teacher leadership, a course in effective literacy instruction in diverse classrooms, and an advanced course in technology. The core also includes a research sequence that prepares candidates to conduct action research in instructional settings. Candidates in the Reading/Writing Endorsement program conduct an action research project in the area of literacy, and also develop school-wide literacy action plans at two different instructional levels (elementary, middle, and/or high school).
Specialty courses provide advanced study in literacy theory and in reading and writing methods. The program also includes a 6-hour clinical practicum and a course in literacy leadership, both of which are designed to prepare candidates to serve as reading specialists in schools. With the core courses in research and diversity, the program provides 24 hours of coursework in the areas of reading, language arts, and related courses. All of the specialty courses are anchored in the standards for literacy professionals, thereby meeting the requirements of the International Reading Association (IRA) and National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
Candidates enrolled in the Teacher Leader Master of Arts with Reading/Writing Endorsement (P-12) Program are encouraged to be actively involved in professional organizations such as the Kentucky Reading Association (http://www.kyreading.org), the International Reading Association (http://www.reading.org), the Kentucky Council of Teachers of English (http://www.kcte.org) and the National Council of Teachers of English (http://www.ncte.org). Candidates enrolled in the program are also encouraged to provide leadership in the profession by publishing articles, presenting information to faculty at their school, and presenting at conferences.
Faculty who teach in the Reading/Writing program have a variety of professional experiences at both the elementary and secondary levels and are well known in the fields of literacy and multicultural education.
