Teacher Leader MA Online Cohort Information
Online Teacher Leader Master of Arts (TLMA) with Endorsement / Certification / Cognate option:
Beginning in Fall 2011, students who wish to enroll in the TLMA program and pursue an endorsement (ESL, Gifted and Talented, or Instructional Technology), Moderate Severe Disabilities certification, or the Autism or ESL Cognate, have the option of completing their program as a member of an online TMLA cohort. This program will be limited to 20 students per cohort group. By choosing this cohort program, students will take the all of the courses primarily online.
Students will attend a Town Meeting each semester that will constitute the first class session. In addition, some classes may require an additional face-to-face class meeting, most likely on a Saturday or an evening during the week. These requirements will be clearly communicated to the student in advance and will happen only when the professor deems necessary. Students must agree to take the first three required TLMA cohort classes (consisting of EDU 510 (first semester), EDU 529 (second semester) and EDU 545 (third semester)) in order to remain in the cohort. Cohort students will be pre-registered for these three courses unless other arrangements are made. Other classes may be taken as they become available, and cohort student will be responsible for registering for those classes following normal registration
procedures.
- How is the online TLMA different from the current blended TLMA?
If you enroll in the online TLMA, you will take your first 3-4 courses with the same 20 student cohort. These courses (EDU 510, EDU 527, EDU 529, and EDU 545) will be offered to the cohort students as online courses, requiring an on-campus meeting for the first class session and, if deemed necessary by the professor, an additional meeting on a Saturday. In the blended TLMA, the EDU 510, EDU 529, and EDU 545 classes are blended, which will require to 50% of the class sessions). In the blended TLMA, you are not required to take the first 3-4 classes with the same students.
The other major difference between the online TLMA and the blended TLMA is the requirement of choosing an endorsement / certification / cognate option. In the blended TLMA, students may choose either to complete courses in their content area, complete the Reading/Writing program, OR to choose one of the other endorsements (ESL, Gifted/Talented, Instructional Technology), a certification (MSD), or a cognate (Autism Spectrum Disorder, ESL). In the new online cohort, all students must choose on the endorsments (ESL, Gifted/Talented, Instructional Technology), a certification (MSD), or a cognate (Autism Spectrum Disorder, ESL).
2. When will I take the required cohort classes and how will I register for them?
For the Fall 2011 cohort, the courses will consist of:
- FALL 2011: EDU 510
- SPRING 2012: EDU 529
- SUMMER 1 2012: EDU 545
- SUMMER 2 2012: EDU 527
In order to stay in the online cohort, you must take these classes with your cohort. If you choose to leave the cohort, you will not have priority registration to take future online
versions of these courses.
If you want, you can take your endorsement / certification / cognate courses along with these required courses or you can wait and take them after the cohort courses are complete. You may even take endorsement / certification / cognate courses before you begin the fall 2011 cohort. For example, you may be admitted for the summer 2011 session and take required endorsement/certification/cognate courses before you take EDU 510 in the Fall.
The Graduate Office will pre-register you for the cohort courses (i.e., EDU510, EDU 529, EDU 545, and EDU 527). Once you have finished these four courses, you will have completed the cohort requirements and you will be responsible for registering for the other courses in your program.
3. How do I apply for the cohort program and what happens after I’m accepted?
To apply for the cohort, fill out the Graduate Application: click here for graduate application
After you are admitted, you will be notified of the required orientation session, which will meet before the on-campus class meeting of EDU 510. At that orientation, you will learn the details of the graduate program and the TLMA and you will meet with your advisor to sign your program contract.
