Program Completion Requirements

To complete the program, candidates must:

• pass both Praxis tests required for LBD certification in Kentucky, (link to the content below)
• complete all coursework and pass all LBD Program major assessments, following the checkpoint system for progress in the program; (link to the content below)
• have an overall GPA of 3.0;
• have no unresolved Dispositions Records of Concern;
• prepare a portfolio demonstrating proficiency meeting teaching standards;
• complete EDU 596-597 major assessments for research if applicable; and
• apply for graduation following Georgetown timelines and procedures.

Once the candidate has completed the program, Georgetown will assist the candidate in applying to the EPSB for a Professional LBD certificate (regular certificate).

Praxis Tests for LBD Certification

To receive LBD certification in Kentucky, all candidates must pass two Praxis tests in special education

• Exceptional Children: Core Knowledge (#0353), passing score of 157; and
• Exceptional Children: Mild to Moderate (#0542), passing score of 173.

LBD Coursework

The curriculum for the LBD program is contained in a set of closely aligned exceptional child education courses, supported by general methods classes and foundational courses in education. As a masters program, candidates are expected to complete 38-40 graduate hours to meet degree requirements. Click here for a sample LBD curriculum contract. • 26 hours in Exceptional Child Education (ECE) courses:
  • Exceptional Child Education Coursework consists of 8 courses (26 hours)
    • five (5) ECE required methods courses (14 hrs).
      • ECE 500 Educational Evaluation
      • ECE 501 Behavior and Classroom Management for LBD
      • ECE 502 Introduction to LBD
      • ECE 503 Educational Programming for LBD
      • ECE 504 Collaboration and Advocacy
    • three (3) ECE field component courses (12 hrs), which each include supervised field experiences, mentoring by a paid, experienced local LBD-certified teacher, and observations by college LBD faculty.
      • ECE 575A Field Component IA: 60 field contact hours (3 hrs);
      • ECE 575B Field Component IB: 60 field contact hrs (3 hrs); and
      • ECE 576 Field Component II (6 hrs): 240 contact hours, as the culminating or clinical experience in an LBD teaching position or in a student teaching assignment.
• 2 hours in educational technology, including assistive technology for students with disabilities (EDU 542); and
• 9-12 hours in other education courses (EDU), based on education courses that candidates may have completed previously. (linked to the following page:

Other Education Coursework Taken by LBD Candidates

In addition to EDU 542 Education Technology:

• EDU 565 Human Development, Behavior and Learning;
• EDU 506 History and Philosophy of Education;
• For those candidates without an elementary education background:

• EDU 501 Methods of Teaching Reading, and
• EDU 509 Teaching Elementary School Math;

• For LBD-Additional candidates with elementary education:

• EDU 596-597, with an action research/inquiry component
