Field experiences are a part of all graduate education programs.
If you are an initial, traditional-route student (not currently a certified teacher and are planning to complete a traditional student teaching placement in spring 2014 or later), you are required to complete 200 hours of early field work prior to your student teaching semester. These placements have specific requirements, and you will be working closely with your professors, advisor, and our field placement officer to make sure you are completing the required field work.
If you are an initial, alternative-route student (teaching on a TC-TP) or an advanced student (a currently certified teacher) you will complete hours both in your classroom and in other school settings, depending on the requirements of your program.
Regardless of your program, you are required to document your field experiences.
- Check with your advisor for details about the specific field experience requirement associated with your program.
- Check with your professor(s) to see if there are any requirements specific to your class(s).
Once you have done these things, follow the following procedure to arrange, perform, and report on your field experiences.
Field Experience Procedures
If you are taking a class with a required field placement, please follow these steps:
Step 1: Request an Early Field Placement (Initial candidates) or an Advanced Program Field Placement (Advanced candidates)
Please click here and complete the form to request assistance with an early field placement. You should complete this form even if you have already identified a placement, so that our coordinator will have a record of your placement location. (NOTE: this does not apply for ECE 575A, ECE 575B, ECE 576, EDU 552, EDU 535, or EDU 536. For those forms, see below.)
Step 2: Print Forms for Collection
While you are in the field, you will need to collect detailed information about each experience. Download the appropriate form and print copies to take with you.
(Note: Make sure you collect all of the data indicated on the form for each experience. The systems below will not accept partially complete experiences. Also, if your experience spans multiple class periods, each period should be treated as a separate experience.)
Step 3: Enter the field experience data you collected into the Georgetown College Education Department field experience system
After you have completed your field experience, enter the information into the department’s field experience system.
Undergraduate candidates enter data here .
Initial candidates enter data here.
Advanced candidates enter data here.
**VERY IMPORTANT:  YOU MUST KNOW YOUR STUDENT ID IN ORDER TO SUBMIT YOUR HOURS ELECTRONICALLY.**
If you do not know your student ID, please refer to the following instructions to obtain it:
Log into the Home Portal > My Information (Near the bottom of the screen) or https://my.georgetowncollege.edu/ICS/My_Information.jnz┬á┬á – GC ID will be listed on this page.
Step 4: Enter the field experience data you collected into the Kentucky Field Experience Tracking System (KFETS)
If you are an initial student and plan to student teach after January 1, 2014, you must enter your experience data into this system. Check with your advisor if you have questions about whether this step applies to you.
If you are required to complete this step, to get instructions and enter completed experiences:
- Go to http://www.epsb.ky.gov/ and log in. (If this is your first time you may need to create an account.)
- In the left column click on Field Experience Tracking System link (see below).
The classroom demographic data in KFETS is updated 2 or 3 weeks after the beginning of the fall and spring P-12 school semester. Wait 2 or 3 weeks after the semester begins before trying to enter experiences into KFETS to ensure the demographic data has been updated.
Note: The Georgetown College Education Department does not operate or support KFETS. All support questions should be directed to the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board.)
