According to the Department of Education, in Kentucky, “Every teacher is an ESL teacher.” Teachers, administrators, and school districts agree that their schools need teachers in all disciplines who are capable of serving non-English-speaking populations. These teachers must be able to show evidence of their ability to successfully meet the needs of ESL learners in their daily lessons in order to close achievement gaps. Our program is designed to assist any teacher or person who has a minimum of a bachelor’s degree with the opportunity to learn more about how to work with ESL students.

This program consists of four online courses (12 credit hours). The classes may be taken individually for informational purposes, professional development, or as part of teaching certificate reinstatement. Candidates in our MAED Teacher Leader or Rank I programs can complete the ESL cognate as part of their elective hours.

Candidates applying only for this cognate program will apply online as a special student pursuing a cognate only. Candidates who wish to take these classes as a part of a MAED Teacher Leader or Rank I program fill out the same online application, but select the appropriate degree program plus the ESL cognate.
