Graduate Environmental Education Endorsement Program

Not just for teachers, our Environmental Education Endorsement Program is beneficial for P-12 educators as well as anyone working in environmentally-related fields. This course of study may be taken for professional development or may be applied toward a Teacher Leader Master of Arts degree or Rank One in School Improvement Master of Arts degree. Individual courses may also be taken as electives without completing the entire 12-hour endorsement program.

Our online core classes and optional on-campus electives offer flexible scheduling options, while field experiences give students the opportunity to apply the concepts they have learned. For maximum convenience, the endorsement can be completed fully online (with one field experience required).

Interdisciplinary, project-based courses are designed to cultivate environmental literacy across the curriculum in both formal and informal educational settings. Our two required core courses meet all of the North American Association of Environmental Education (NAAEE) standards and guidelines. Our coursework is designed to provide Kentucky teachers with the knowledge and skills to apply the Next Generation Science Standards in their own classrooms, as well as training in the implementation of the Kentucky Environmental Literacy Plan (KELP) for public schools.

Participants may then choose from several electives for their other two courses, including options in Environmental Science and English. Other elements of the program include emphases on environmental ethics, faith and the environment, nature writing and journaling, social justice, and service learning to help cultivate a deeper understanding of diversity, culture, and justice in the context of the larger life community.
