What criterion 10.8 says:

The teacher uses computers and other technologies such as interactive instruction, audio/video conferencing, and other distance learning applications for students with special needs.

Translation and Discussion:

Teachers can integrate technology into the curriculum by using all possible sources, including those sources that are not in direct contact.

This criterion seems to have been designed to make sure the teacher looks for and evaluates methods to incorporate technology into their classroom through the use of the assistive and adaptive devices available today.

Teachers who meet this criterion will:

  • Assist students in learning the technology
  • Make the technology environment more accessible
  • Provide access to these devices through school setting
  • Help students enhance independence using technology
  • Improve the quality of life of a person with a disability

Possible teacher assessment tools or methods could include:

  • Student and Parent surveys
  • IEP’s
  • State and National Student and Teacher Standards in Technology

To Improve your skills on this criterion, consider the following sites and online resources:

One place to find help would be the The Alliance for Technology Access (ATA) is a network of community-based

Resource Centers, Developers and Vendors, Affiliates, and Associates.

They are dedicated to providing information and support services to children and adults with disabilities,
and increasing their use of standard, assistive, and information technologies. These ATA Members can be found all across the country. They hope that this web site will let you get to know us a little better, make use of our resources, contact one of our members and perhaps consider joining us in achieving our mission of

"connecting children and adults with disabilities to technology tools." (Taken from ATA site)

Another source is the ABLEDATA site sponsored by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, U.S. Department of Education. This site gives great links that help the reader explore the world of Assistive Technology.

Another site Closing the Gap, focuses on the special needs person and how they can find out more information on their disability and link up with people who have that disability

Another site that will lead you closer to home is the Bluegrass technology center. This center is a consumer driven, non profit, grassroots organization assisting individuals who have disabilities, their families, and service providers in connecting with various technologies and services that provide the gateway to greater independence, productivity, and quality of life.(Taken from BTC Site)
