What criterion 10.6 says:

The teacher uses the computer to do word processing, create databases and spreadsheets, access electronic mail and the Internet, make presentations, and use other emerging technologies to enhance professional productivity and support instruction.

Translation and Discussion:

Teachers can integrate technology into the curriculum by using all possible sources, including those sources that are not in direct contact.  Standard 10.6 requires teachers to have a basic knowledge of the computer and its many uses.  Teachers should be able to use word processing skills to develop communication for parents and to develop materials for the students.  Teachers should also have the ability to teach how to and actually develop presentations in various programs.  This will enhance the information that is presented to the students as well at enhance their understanding.  Teachers must set an example for their students.  Technology is important in real life and does have many uses.

This criterion seems to have been designed to make sure teachers are using what they expect their own students to be able to use.  Teachers must set an example for their students.  By using technology daily, teachers are demonstrating their expectations for their students.

Teachers who meet this criterion will:

  • Use e-mail for professional communications.

  • Use word processing for newsletters, tests, student assignments, communicating to parents.

  • Use spreadsheets, presentation software, Internet, in all areas of instruction.

  • Show evidence of using technology in lesson plans.  Students select technology tools to use to demonstrate learning - graphing calculators, digital photography, scanning photographs.

  • Provide professional development or is a mentor in the integration of technology in teaching and learning.  Design and maintain a classroom web site.

Possible teacher assessment tools or methods could include:

  • Technology Impact Review Tool - evaluating the impact technology is having on teaching and student learning.

  • The Profiler - evaluating individual skills with this tutorial on how to use this online survey to give individual feedback on skills needed to meet technology standards.

  • Technology Standard Scoring Guide - evaluating teachers on their implementation of the teacher standards.  Administrators can use this guide to assess and develop professional development activities for individual teachers.
