The teacher demonstrates basic knowledge of
computer/peripheral parts and attends to simple connections and
installations.

Translation and Discussion:

Criterion 10.4 says that the classroom teacher will be able to recognize and hook up the main parts of the computer (CPU, Monitor, Keyboard, Printer, and Mouse)

A Good Place To Start

This is a very basic criterion, and an important one.  This would be a good stepping stone for those who feel they need a good start somewhere.  Just by looking through a few of the links in this site a classroom teacher should be able to feel comfortable in saying they have mastered 10.4

Teachers who meet this criterion will:

successfully connect up the mouse, keyboard, monitor, printer
and network cable to the central processing unit

knowledgeably talk about the computer and its parts

have the ability to do some basic troubleshooting if one of the
peripherals appear not to work

Possible teacher assessment tools or methods could include:

anecdotal notations of teacher communication about computer
parts

a teacher-created log of computer problems during the school
year (or a checklist with technologically correct terms use

A self evaluation of how the teacher feel he/she is doing in mastering 10.4

To Improve your skills on this criterion, consider the following sites and online resources:

The World Wide Web has an overwhelming number of sites that deal
with computer peripherals. For the teacher that wants to learn about
the basic parts of the computer, the Computer Parts website is a
useful one. Pictures of each peripheral and troubleshooting tips are
given. The Technology Tools website, offers a more in-depth look at
the computer components. In addition, this site offers a free
download of a Power Point presentation on computer peripherals.
This presentation could be used by the teacher as well as using as a
lesson with students. EZ Tutorials on Computers has different lessons
you can carry out to learn more about the computer. Eastside
Technical Center (Lexington, Kentucky) offers basic computer advice
as well as basic networking advice. After taking a look at all of the
above links, a teacher should be able to meet the criterion of Teacher
Standard 10.4.
