What are some resources teachers might use to help gain competency in this area? |
To improve your skills on this criterion, consider the following sites and online resources: There are many resources on the Internet to assist teachers in gaining competency on Standard 10.14. Many computer applications are versatile allowing teachers to use the same application in multiple settings for multiple purposes. The key when deciding whether the technology application is better suited for individual, small or large group setting is deciding what the objective of the instruction is and not adapting the instruction to fit the technology but find technology appropriate to enhance the learning. Individual Resources for individual learning activities would include using the internet to teach an instructional unit like in a Web Quest where students search the internet in inquiry-oriented activity. You can find an explanation of Web Quests and find examples at http://edweb.sdsu.edu/courses/edtec596/about_webquests.html Students can also use the internet for instructional courses, designed to reproduce or complement a full middle- and high-school curriculum as in the on-line units provided from the Kentucky Migrant Technology Project (KMTP.) http://www.migrant.org/courses/index.cfm This site also has a full Spanish translation version too for ESL students. http://www.migrant.org/esl/index.cfm
Small Group Good resources to start from for small group learning activities are programs that are not too complex to use and might be less intimidating to the students when given as a group assignment. Presentational software like PowerPoint is a good application that can be hard for all students to grasp immediately. A wonderful How To tutorial for PowerPoint has been posted on the internet on a website by Georgetown College professor Dr William Rafaill. It takes the user step by step through the process and is very user friendly. http://spider.georgetowncollege.edu/wsr/csc120/preso97.htm Web Pages are also very good teaching tools but can be difficult for first-time users. A great Web Quest on how to create a school web page can be found at http://www.learningspace.org/content/default.html Another useful web tutorial on how to use FrontPage, Microsoft's web page creation software, can be found at http://www.learningspace.org/tech/FrontPage/index.htm Large Group Good resources for appropriate large group appropriate technology is applications that are better suited for larger viewings. The best devices to project computer displays are video projectors and Smart Boards. This resource is geared " to setting up the Meadows Lecture Theatre for an A/V presentation. Many of these steps however are generic to the setting up of similar facilities in other lecture theatres." But has a lot of helpful information to help teachers see the possibilities of this technology and how to go about applying them. http://www.malts.ed.ac.uk/resources/tutorials/tutorials_guide.html |
