What criterion 10.13 says:

The teacher applies research-based instructional practices that use computers and other technology.

Translation and Discussion:

This criterion seems to have been designed to make sure that educators use current, and reliable technology research when integrating technology into the curriculum.  Educators should utilize research that has been proven and published in reliable resources such as educational journals.  Educators need acknowledge that not all information on the internet is reliable and current.

Educators need to seek professional development opportunities that demonstrate effective technology research methods in the classroom.

Educators should use their technological knowledge gained from research and professional development to strengthen their abilities in the classroom.

Technology is changing at an electrifying pace.  In order for schools to keep on top of all the changes, teachers need to use up to date research to stay current in the area of technology.  Teachers need to educate themselves in the ever changing multiple facets of technology.  Educators need to use up to date and reliable research methods when designing technology integrated activities and lesson plans.

National Technology Standards (ISTE Standards) state the following about applying research based practices in the classroom::

"B. Personal and Professional Use of Technology.     Candidates will apply tools for enhancing their own professional growth and productivity. They will use technology in communicating, collaborating, conducting research, and solving problems. In addition, they will plan and participate in activities that encourage lifelong learning and will promote equitable, ethical, and legal use of computer/technology resources."  Source:  http://www.iste.org/standards/ncate/found.html

Teachers who meet this criterion will:

  • Seek professional development opportunities that demonstrate successful technology research methods used in the classroom.
  • Familiarize and align themselves with district, state and national technology standards.
  • Assimilate information from professional journals and online-sources when lesson planning and developing activities for technology integration.
  • Search the internet for useful (and reliable) current research methods used in the classroom.
  • Above all:  don't be afraid to attempt something new!

Possible teacher assessment tools or methods could include:

  • One possible assessment could be a self-evaluation completed by the teacher.  A self evaluation could help one to identify their strengths and improve upon their weaknesses.
  • Classroom observations could be done to see if a teacher is applying learned research methods in the classroom.
  • Lesson plans will reflect the integration of technology research methods in the classroom.
  • Teachers could take the Profiler .  The Profiler is on on-line self evaluation form.  The profiler provides district wide feed back.

To Improve your skills on this criterion, consider the following sites and online resources:

One such site is International Society for Technology in Education (or ISTE).  ISTE is an organization that promotes technology in the classroom.  Each year ISTE publishes research findings about books that affect the way teachers integrate technology in the classroom.

The Kentucky Virtual Library provides quality library and information resources.  Trained, professional staff help support the research and life long learning needs of students.  It accesses over 30 abstracts and full-text databases.  The services is free from Kentucky public schools and libraries.  It can be accessed elsewhere using and ID and password that can be obtained at your local public library or from your district technology coordinator.

Brint.com is a site that provides educators with current research articles on education and the internet.  There are links to articles from internet statistics to internet research tools and techniques.

The Association for Educational Communications and Technology has a listserv of web sites you can search for recent research on technology integration in the classroom.

The University of Kentucky provides a listserv of web sites specifically designed for research in the area of education and educational technology.

Yahooligans is a search engine designed specifically for students doing their own research in the classroom.

Jerry Taylor's site for teachers.  Jerry Taylor is a technology teacher for the Greece school district.  This site has many links for teachers who are interested in integrating technology.
