What criterion 10.1 says:

The teacher. . .Operates a multimedia computer and peripherals to install and use a variety of software.

Translation and Discussion:

Teacher will be able to operate a computer in a variety of ways to enhance the classroom environment.

This criterion seems to have been designed to make sure that all teacher can use and help maintain their knowledge of the computer, based on their ability to hook up and install new software/hardware.

Teachers who meet this criterion will:

Be able to troubleshoot, and use the inputs and outputs for applications.

Be able to use software applications such as Word, Excel, STI, Browser, and
e-mail.

Be able to create a presentation using multimedia, such as PowerPoint or i-movie.
Able to plug peripherals into the computer.

Be able to use equipment such as scanners, digital cameras, web cams, and
others.

Be able to share their presentation through TV monitors or screens and
projection.

Be able to download freeware and software. They will also know how to install
software and remove it.

Be able to guide others through to process of doing each of the above things.

Possible teacher assessment tools or methods could include:

A self-evaluation form could be used to see how the teacher feels he/she is doing
in meeting this criterion, and also find areas for improvement.

Teacher could help run a professional development on this standard.

Another tool to help self-evaluate would be a profiler survey. This tool is used to
strengthen abilities to share expertise within your district. It can be found at
http://profiler.hprtec.org/

www.ed.gov/pubs/EdTechGuide/appb.html is a site that has many types of
evaluation forms and worksheets that have a variety of purposes in evaluating
technology skills. This may be a helpful place to start.

To Improve your skills on this criterion, consider the following sites and online resources:

There are several different multimedia sites that provide information that may be helpful
to educators. www.algonquinc.on.ca/edtech/mmclass.html is titled Multimedia in the
Classroom. It is helpful in deciding how to present your presentation. This site gives
advantages and disadvantages of using methods such as TV monitors or a screen to
project a presentation. It also discusses which method is best depending on your
purpose, audience size, and room setup.

With so much software available that has a wealth of graphics, information and such, it's
hard to know what to use in a presentation. Multimedia Design at
www.algonquinc.on.ca/edtech/mmdesign.html is a place to visit for help. It gives
guidelines of what to use from multimedia software to design a multimedia presentation
so that the topic you're presenting doesn't get lost in the process. It also has a few links
to show you examples of some of the features offered.

To find directions and tutorials for using various technology look at
www.learningspace.org/tech/how_to/howto.html This site has links to introduce the
Internet and Netscape, saving graphics from the web, making audio clips, e-mail,
bookmarks, front page and a few others. It seems to go from very basic skills to more
advanced. This would be a great place to visit for someone who needs extra support
with basic applications.

www.learningspace.org/tech/tech_skills/tech_skills.html is titled Technology Skills
Lessons. This site has a variety of lessons designed to help teach students or adults how
to use certain programs or develop specific technology skills. One of the lessons is the
steps for making files downloadable from the Internet. It can be found directly at
www.learningspace.org/tech/tech_skills/downlfiles.html This would go along with the
criterion of being able to download software.

For basic troubleshooting for hardware for Macintosh you can visit
www.learningspace.org/tech/tech_assist/mac/mac_assistance.html You can also find
downloads for Hewlett Packard peripherals. You can also look at
www.learningspace.org/ which is the main homepage for the above links. You may find
helpful links that aren't mentioned above.

A place to go to find reviews of educational software is the homepage of
www.superkids.com which also has a variety of links.
