Mentors

Looking for professional guidance and input in your career exploration? A Mentor can provide valuable insight from his or her personal and career experience, which will give you perspective as you work toward professional success. You can seek a Mentor through Tiger Net. This gives you the opportunity to connect with Mentors with experiences in areas of interest. You simply need to log in through Tiger Net and click on the Tiger Mentoring button to conduct your search. Mentoring options vary by the individual relationship. They could include correspondence addressing specific career/professional questions, informational gathering interviews, shadowing opportunities, mock interviews and even internships.

Having a mentor to provide first hand information on a particular career is one of the ways that you can be involved in helping students in their career paths. Informational interviewing involves a session where the student and professional meet and engage in a Q & A discussion. Informational interviews allow students to question mentors regarding their experience, how they chose their particular practice area or specialty, what training they would suggest and what constitutes their daily routine. This allows the student to gain an understanding of the career field as they can ask the questions that most intrigue them. Often, this meeting provides students with 'real' information that helps them decide if this is a viable career option for them.
(It is the Graves Center for Calling and Career's preference that Human Resource professionals with current interviewing skills conduct mock interviews. A mentor can connect their mentee with HR professionals in their organizations) Mentors also may offer to conduct mock interviews with students. Mock interviews can take place at Georgetown College or the alum's firm or place of business. This is where the student gets to practice an interview. Generally, this would entail a 15-20 minute interview followed by 10-15 minutes of feedback on interviewing techniques. This is a great opportunity for students to hone their interviewing skills and for alumni/professionals to offer their expertise.
Shadowing is a short-term experience where a student ‘shadows’ or observes a professional working in a field that interest them. This helps the student learn about the day-to-day activities of that particular career field, investigate the work environment, ask related questions, and get a first-hand look at the career in the real world. Shadowing is a great opportunity for students to investigate a particular industry, or clarifying the right career path.

Tips for Mentees

  1. Choose your mentor based on his or her professional and life experiences and make your selection based on similarities.
  2. Do your research. Learn more about your mentor’s career industry and organization before you contact him or her.
  3. Provide a brief introduction about yourself in your initial contact with your mentor. By sharing your ideas and feelings about your career path with your mentor and letting your mentor know how he or she can help you, he or she will have a better understanding of your expectations.
  4. Get a clear understanding of the level of your mentor’s commitment at the beginning of the relationship. Does he or she want to be contacted frequently or once a month? What method of correspondence is preferred – telephone calls, face-to-face meetings, emails?
  5. Be respectful of the privacy of your mentor.
  6. Respond to your mentor in a timely manner and be on time for all meetings. If a scheduling conflict occurs, contact your mentor in advance to reschedule.
  7. Suggest topics you want to discuss with your mentor prior to face-to-face meetings.
  8. Be honest.
  9. Say "thanks" often!
  10. Remember that your mentor is a person, and like you, he or she wants to be liked and respected.
