Fall 2007 Art Faculty News
Dr Decker is editing two volumes on public sculpture to appear in the award-winning journal, Collections, published by Alta Mira Press. In addition to soliciting articles from leading scholars in the field, she is preparing her own contributions for each issue, which include an overview of public sculpture as a medium (Spring 2008) and a bibliographic essay on resources (Summer 2008).
In his second year of teaching at Georgetown College, Professor Daniel Graham has been actively showing his work locally. His solo exhibition, “Mouthpiece”, was on view at the College’s Anne Wright Wilson Gallery, and opened the 07-08 exhibition season. In November, his solo exhibition, “J. Daniel Graham: Recent Works” was on view at Artspace Gallery on Mill Street in Lexington KY. The show was a feature on the Lexington Gallery Hop on Friday, November 16. Daniel’s new, interactive public sculpture, Pass the Lace Through the Loop, has been on view on Georgetown College's campus since early October. The see-saw is one of eight works selected for the Live Learn Believe: Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition. The sculpture will remain on view through 07-08.
Darrell Kincer, professor of photography and digital media, currently has two photographic works on display at the Lexington Art League’s Loudoun House. The show, “Photography: What Now?” was juried by award winning photographer Anita Douthat, and features 70 artworks from across the country. Prof. Kincer was one among a hand-full of artists to receive a Juror’s Award for one of his photographs. The show is on display now and runs through December 9. Visit Lexington Art League for more information.
Prof. Kincer recently finished a photographic project for Rivierstad Church Organ Consultants, LLC. and the Johannus Organ Company of the Netherlands, documenting the new organ in Hill Chapel as well as a second at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The companies are working on add campaigns for 2008 and required high-end digital photographs of the two recent installations. To see the results, contact Darrell for further information. Georgetown College’s Digital Photography class recently hosted Lexington photographer Andy Olsen as a guest speaker. During his visit to the class, Mr. Olsen answered questions about his career as a freelance photographer, took time to critique and discuss student work, and shared his personal portfolio. Among numerous assignments, he spoke in detail about a current documentary project involving a local couple and their adoption of a Haitian orphan. The story is schedule to run as short series in the Lexington Herald Leader in the near future.
Under the leadership of Prof. Kincer, the Art Department’s computer lab is now up to speed on all its computers with Adobe’s Lightroom, an application designed specifically for digital photographers. Lightroom allows users to organize, edit, develop, present, and print their images with relative ease. Keeping Georgetown College on the cutting edge, the new application opens up a great deal of potential for all students interested in photography as the medium transitions into the digital era.
Also, in the Fall, the art department secured a win in the Georgetown College "Department Wars" which pits teams of six faculty or staff against one another in a competition, over eight weeks, to log the most miles running or jogging. Our winning team, comprised of art department faculty and staff Juilee Decker, Karen Gillenwater, Daniel Graham, and Darrell Kincer, was joined by College archivist Dr. Glen Taul and Library Technician Greg Decker. Together, this team logged over 750 miles from September 4 through November 4. Congrats!
