Flash Crimson represents a historical and technical oil glaze technique used by Vermeer, Titian and Rembrandt. It is unusual in that the traditional oil glaze technique is not generally used in contemporary abstract painting. The piece is painted on a stretched linen support and incorporates the use of an attached rope. Artist Marcia Myers no longer uses this technique because the varnishes in oil glaze are highly toxic and she discovered that they were affecting her health. She switched to acrylic and then ultimately began to develop the fresco technique on linen for which she is recognized.
