Description:
Georgetown College and Georgetown & Scott County Museum have organized
an exhibition devoted to one of the early trained
trained artists to work in Kentucky.
A Bostonian Painter in Kentucky : Asa Park (1790 – 1827) is the first exhibition
solely
dedicated to works by this portrait painter. This exhibition opened on Thursday,
October 19th , 2006 and be on view until November 30 in Georgetown College 's
Anne Wright Wilson Fine Arts Building.
The show will heighten community and regional appreciation of Park's work, his
connection to Georgetown, Scott County, Kentucky, and his role in the transitioning
of artistic styles of that era. Asa Park was born in Massachusetts and studied initially
with John Ritto Penniman (1782-1841), and later with Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828). The
training he received is verified in both his work and advertisements. Park traveled from
Boston to Pittsburgh, and then onto Lexington where Matthew Harris Jouett (1788-
1827),
Joseph Bush (1794-1865), and William E. West (1788-1857) were working.
