Abstract Painting "Once Removed"
In 1998, the Museum of Contemporary Art in
Houston held the exhibition Abstract Painting "Once Removed." It focused
on work by artists who were pushing the boundaries of this age-old medium to
produce edgy and provocative “paintings” which are distanced from the “pure”
abstraction of earlier periods. This course will retrace the works included,
similar exhibitions, curatorial trends, artists and their intentions, covering
the decade since the show. Working in reverse chronology, this course will also
reference abstraction’s modernist roots, but in a limited and careful way, as
this project’s ambition is to break from this “past.”
