A fireside chat between former Hall of Fame journalist Billy Reed and John Carroll, who was editor of the Lexington Herald-Leader in 1986 when the paper won a Pulitzer for "Playing Above the Rules"...its investigation of cash payments that were made to University of Kentucky basketball players. Carroll was also editor of the Los Angeles Times which won 13 Pulitzers during his five year tenure. He is currently working on a book about the relationship between sports and college presidents. This event is part of Year 2 of the "Conversations with Champions" series, an offshoot of the College's Academy for Character in Sport.
Undoubtedly Georgetown’s dirtiest tradition, Grubfest goes against all of your mother’s admonitions to stop playing with your food. Every September, students join in the Quad for the annual battle to see which team can complete the most challenges and, of course, get the filthiest! In a matter of hours, the Quad is transformed from a lush, green open area for socializing and studying into a slimy, muddy arena covered with food products. At the end of Grubfest, the two dirtiest and most creative participants are crowned king and queen of the year’s festivities. A lesser known aspect of Grubfest is the annual “Race for the Showers” that follows this Georgetown tradition.
Georgetown College's "Conversation with Champions" program, hosted by celebrated sports columnist Billy Reed, continues for its second year. The discussion with celebrated athletes and individuals involved in management of athletics at both the collegiate and professional level focuses particularly on restoring character, ethics and integrity to sports. The “Conversations” are videotaped for later broadcast on KET’s Kentucky Network (KETKY).
