Georgetown College is currently phasing out its major and minor in French.  Students who enrolled in this major prior to Fall 2014 should consult previous years’ catalogs for information on coursework for that program.  General education courses  will continue to be offered.

 

Note:

  • Please be certain to check placement requirements
  • 201 can satisfy both General Education requirements and major/minor requirements for French, German, and Spanish

Students with two years or more of high school French (level II or higher) desiring to continue in French must take the French placement test in order to determine placement in FRE101, 102, 201 or above.

Major

(B.A. degree) A total of thirty-three semester hours required above 102, thirty-six hours above 102 required for the teaching major. Language: 18 hours, including FRE 230, 235, 333, 335W, 435. Literature and Civilization: 12 hours of culture and civilization on the 300 level, plus 3 hours from the literature or topics/seminar block on the 400 level. Those seeking certification in teaching must include 310, 312CA, 333, and 402 in their programs. Majors will achieve the ACTFL level Advanced, the CEF designation B2.1.2, and teaching majors will achieve the ACTFL level Advanced Plus, and the CEF designation B2.2.  Allied Requirement: 3 credit hours as approved by French faculty.

Minor

A total of eighteen semester hours above the 100 level.  FRE402 will not count towards the minor. Minors will achieve the ACTFL level Intermediate High, CEF designation B2.1.1.

Students who have successfully completed 200 level courses will not be allowed to take 100 level courses; nor will students who have successfully completed 300 or 400 level courses be allowed to take 100 level courses or 201. Exceptions to this policy must be approved by the departmental chair. (This policy applies to students who have taken language courses at Georgetown or another college or university.)
