History

Whereas much knowledge is departmentally fragmented, history courses examine the development and interrelationships of events, institutions, and ideas. Depending on the specific course (see descriptive listings of particular courses below), history courses examine the evolution of political, economic, social and religious institutions; international relations and diplomacy; science and technology; ideas, aesthetics and literature; and other social and cultural subjects. In each course students examine a significant body of material, analyze its validity and credibility, its causes and effects, its historical importance, and communicate their conclusions effectively. The History Department encourages student leadership in Phi Alpha Theta History Fraternity, and outstanding students may have opportunities for internships in Kentucky state libraries and archives. The department encourages students to supplement history courses with study and travel to important historic sites and archives in the USA and abroad.

GOVERNMENT

General Information

  • An undergraduate degree in history is good preparation for graduate study in history as well as other areas such as psychology, law, or business.
  • Research the prerequisites of the area of interest and tailor program of study to meet curricular and skill needs.
  • Part-time, summer, internship, and volunteer experiences are critical.
  • Develop skills by obtaining a leadership role in a school or community organization.
  • Get involved in Student Government.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are imperative for most careers related to history, politics, or government.
  • Become familiar with the government application process for opportunities in federal, state, or local government.
  • Prepare to develop a specialty area including both academic training and work experience for history related careers.
