Assistant Professor of Sociology
Sociology is the systematic study of social life, social change, and the social causes of human behavior.
As a discipline, sociology has a strong connection to Christianity and is particularly interested in social justice and reform. Students with a church-related liberal arts education should develop a holistic perspective of the diverse social world allowing them to see the relationship between individual experiences and society. In conjunction with this development of a sociological perspective, students should gain a greater understanding of different viewpoints through the capacity of verstehen.
The sociology department offers a strong curriculum with the goal of providing students the necessary knowledge and critical thinking skills needed to adequately function in the global twenty-first century. Emphasis is placed on a deep understanding of social theory and methods of research. Many sociology majors continue their education with further professional training in law, ministry, human services, public administration, and law enforcement to name a few, as well as, advanced graduate work in sociology, social work, or other social sciences.
Those students who choose not to continue their education via graduate
school or other professional training are well prepared for a variety of
careers that involve problem-solving, organizing and analyzing
information, and service to others. In essence, our vision is to
develop advocates for change who are committed to scholarship, social
justice, and empowerment.
