Open Position in Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science at Georgetown College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Mathematics at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2010, contingent upon budget approval.  A Ph.D. in Mathematics or a Ph.D./Ed.D. in Mathematics Education with a Master's degree in Mathematics is required.  Additionally, candidates must either be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.

Georgetown College is a private liberal arts institution in central Kentucky serving approximately 1300 students.  Emphasis is placed on teaching excellence in the context of our Christian heritage.  Student advising and service to the department, college, profession, and community are also expected. Research and other forms of scholarly activity are a consideration in promotion decisions.  The successful candidate should expect to teach across the undergraduate curriculum; the teaching load is the equivalent of four three-hour courses per semester.  Applicants from all areas of mathematical expertise are welcome.  Applications from underrepresented groups, including women and minorities, are encouraged.

The successful candidate will be joining a department consisting of four other mathematicians, two computer scientists, and two physicists.  We offer B.A. degrees in mathematics and information systems, and B.S. degrees in mathematics, computer science, computational science and physics.  We are actively participating in a grant our Natural and Life Sciences Division has recently received from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, which includes opportunities for participation in undergraduate research.  The college has also just been awarded an S-STEM grant from the National Science Foundation.

Please submit a cover letter, vita, copies of transcripts, statement of teaching philosophy, and three letters of recommendation.  Please also respond to the following:  Describe a specific teaching experience in a mathematics class or a particular encounter of an academic nature that has inspired you to become a teacher of mathematics.  Summarize the relevant details of this incident so as to make it evident why the experience was valuable.  You may attach supporting materials as appropriate.

The above materials should be sent to:  Dr. Rosemary Allen, Provost/Dean of the College, Georgetown College, 400 E. College Street, Georgetown, KY 40324.  Applications will be accepted until the position is filled; review of applications will begin on November 20.
