Reading & Writing Program Information

Program Contracts are located in Documents & Forms section of this website in a folder called "Curriculum Contracts"

The Master of Arts in Education-Reading/Writing Endorsement Program consists of 12 hours of core professional education courses and 21 hours that are specific to the specialty area, for a total of 33 hours. The 12-hour core includes an initial reflective course, a technology/inquiry course, and two research courses that are taken by all advanced Master of Arts in Education candidates. Specialty courses include advanced literacy methods and nine hours of clinical practice (6 hours in a clinical setting working with P-12 students, and 3 hours in a school setting working with other educators), as well as courses in school literacy policy, writing instruction, and literacy and diversity.

The program is designed to meet standards set forth by the International Reading Association, which requires a minimum of 24 semester hours in the area of Reading/Literacy with a minimum of 6 hours of practicum experiences. Completion of the MA with Reading/Writing Endorsement Program qualifies teachers to serve as reading specialists and literacy coaches at all grade levels (P-12).

Candidates enrolled in the MA with Reading/Writing Endorsement Program are encouraged to be actively involved in professional organizations such as the Kentucky Reading Association (http://www.kyreading.org), the International Reading Association (http://www.reading.org), the Kentucky Council of Teachers of English (http://www.kcte.org), and the National Council of Teachers of English (http://www.ncte.org). Candidates enrolled in the program are also encouraged to provide leadership in the profession by publishing articles, presenting information to faculty at their school, and presenting at conferences.
