Unit 1: Weeks 1-6
During this unit we will work together in class to construct a Amodel,@
five-page research paper based upon research materials located in The
Elements of Argument. This exercise will provide the practical and
conceptual foundation for your self-directed research efforts during the
second part of the semester.

3) discuss articles in class
4) create bibliographically correct note cards
5) make research notes on articles
6) discuss types of evidence and support
7) select a thesis for paper
8) collect supporting evidence from research notes
9) construct outline of argument
10) discuss use of reference material in research paper
how and when to cite references--use of MLA form--the differences
between summary, paraphrase and quotation--the grammatical use of
quotations in sentences
11) discuss thesis-based writing
the concept of the thesis--the logical structure of an argument--the
proper narrative voice (avoiding opinionizing)--evaluating the quality of
support--selecting appropriate evidence
12) prepare rough draft of paper
13) consult with Writing Center on grammar, logic and coherence
14) submit rough draft for evaluation
15) revise rough draft
16) consult with Writing Center for further evaluation
17) submit 1st version of completed paper
18) attend evaluation conference with professor
19) revise 1st version of paper
20) consult with Writing Center
21) attend final evaluation session with professor
Unit 2: weeks 7-16
During this unit students will select research topics of special
interest to them and create a ten page research paper using the research,
logical and composition skills they learned by working on the Amodel@
paper in the first part of the class.
