Quotation Rules

1. You may  correct grammar in situations in which the specific mode of expression is not part of the story.   In all instances, you must treat everyone equally.

2. Omit verbal “white noise”--those annoying verbal tics, like "um" and "like" and "you know." Do not use ellipsis to indicate omission.

3. Use ellipsis when omitting matters of substance.

4. Ask sources to confirm direct quotes, but don’t let them read and correct the story.

5. You are not required to make changes suggested by a source, but NEVER misrepresent a source. Even if they "said" what you say they said, you must represent the sources' intent as well as their words.

6. Try your best to avoid unnamed sources. If unnamed sources give you
damaging or controversial material, get verification.

Academic Departments and Titles

1.  When writing a story, do not use the professor's title after the first use; all subsequent references should be to the last name.  Thus, you should describe me as "Dr. Rosemary Allen" the first time you refer to me, but all subsequent references should identify me as "Allen" (not "Dr. Allen").

2. Remember that titles are in upper case  when they appear BEFORE a name, but in lower case when they appear AFTER a name.  Thus, it is "Georgetown College President William H. Crouch," but "William H. Crouch, president of Georgetown College."

3.  Department names are NOT capitalized, except for those that are proper names of languages.  Thus, it is "the chemistry department,"  but it is "the English department."
