I expect you to use a very specific format when you print out an article: 1. Use 12-point Times New Roman type. 2. Double space; indent paragraphs. 3. Leave a 1.5-inch margin on the left, and a 1-inch margin on all other sides. 4. Put your last name, a short indication of your article's content, and the page number in the upper left-hand corner of every page:: M. T. Jackson 5. Mark the end of your story by hitting a return and then centering the following: -30- 6. Proofread the printout and make corrections using the accepted proofreader's symbols found in your AP Stylebook. 7. Print out any graphics or suggestions for pull quotes or summary boxes on a separate page. This is how I want the printout, but I also expect you to hand me the story on disk for possible inclusion in The Georgetonian, and this format WILL NOT WORK for them. To save to disk: 1. Reset spacing to single spacing 2. Remove all paragraph indents; do not double space between paragraphs. 3. Remove all headers and the -30- at the end 4. At the top, put a possible headline and the focus sentence (which can then be used for the "summary blurb" under the headline). Make sure the focus sentence isn't the same as your lead sentence. 5. At the top of your story (below the headline and summary blurb), type and center your name, using the following format: By NEELY McLAUGHLIN Note the use of capitalization--it's vital that you do the by-line in EXACTLY this format. 6. Using the "Save As" command, save the file AS A .TXT DOCUMENT. To do this, you must both select "text only" as the file type you wish to save AND give the file a .txt extension. 7. Make sure your disk is clearly labeled (best to use the class disk I provided). Also be sure the file name genuinely describes the story--don't just use "article.txt" for instance. 8. Save your graphics in a separate file. |
