I know that this play can be a challenge to a first-time reader. In an attempt to aid your understanding, I have created a number of pages that I hope will help make things clearer. They may only make things more confusing...but I'm hoping for the best. The scene by scene summary is the same as what is on your handout. The historical context is similar to what is on your handout, but it may be a little clearer. The lecture notes should be the biggest help--though I don't claim that I will have covered everything in those notes in class, nor will I claim that everything we discuss in class is in those lecture notes. You may use them as a supplement to the lecture, but don't try to use them as a replacement for taking notes. The section on the humors is the same as was used in the discussion of Chaucer. Humor theory is important to understanding the characters of Hotspur and Falstaff, each of whom represents an example of a character dominated by a particular humor. If you get stuck or do not understand something, be sure to e-mail me questions at rallen@georgetowncollege.edu . Check the Video Broadcast Schedule for the showing of the video version. |
