Honors 211
Journal Assignments:
Fall 2003
Return to English 211 Home Page

I will add the journal assignment for each class period immediately AFTER I've given that assignment, so if you miss class you can check here to find out what your journal question will be. I'll put the most recent entry on top, so expect to find these in reverse order. Remember that each journal entry earns you a maximum of four points: 1) On time; 2) Answers the question; 3) Uses direct reference to the text (page numbers, specific incidents, line numbers, etc.); 4) Fills up an entire 8.5x11" notebook page (or the equivalent).

6. (Due Tuesday, September 16)  Discuss justifications for teaching The Miller's Tale in a literature class.

5. (Due Thursday, September 11)  Do a character list for "The General Prologue," including brief character descriptions of each of the pilgrims (when possible).  For each, indicate whether you think the character is portrayed as morally good, as essentially evil, or as morally ambiguous.

 4. (Due Tuesday, September 9)  What is Sir Gawain's true test? Does he pass?

3. (Due Thursday, September 4)  Compare/contrast the values of the civilization described in Beowulf and the civilization described in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

2. (Due Tuesday, September 2)  Can you make a case for a feminist view of the portrayal of women so far in this work?

1. (Due Thursday, August 28): As you read the descriptions of the leaders of the Danes and the Geats, try to figure out what characteristics seem to be admired in the leaders of this civilization. See if you can deduce the characteristics of the heroic ideal.
