Course Description
(as printed in the Catalog) "Introduces research techniques and instruction in the principles of documentation and scholarship as well as continues a concern with rhetoric, style, clear thinking and successful communication."
Textbooks
The New St. Martin’s Handbook; The Structure of Argument
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you should have a thorough grasp of what is expected of you in college-level research writing. But the main goal of this course is to develop critical thinking and intellectual responsibility. This course relates to the college’s general education goals by promoting skills in critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem solving; developing effective communication; facilitating an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures and perspectives; providing experience in considering the fundamental questions of knowing oneself, the global community, and God; and developing the desire and capacity for a life of continued intellectual and spiritual development.

Requirements of the Course
You will have two major papers and a series of minor assignments. There will be no major tests, but I may often quiz you over readings and you will have a library test. 20% will be based on your minor assignments, including a series of informal writing assignments. 25% of your grade is based on the first major paper and its revision; 45% of your grade is based on your second major paper. 10% of your grade is based on class participation, including an oral report over your final paper’s topic. For both major papers, you must attend a research verification conference in which we go over your use of sources.
Evaluation
Each of your papers will be graded according to a gradesheet based on a 100-point scale. For your first papers, grades for your original and revised version will be combined to reach your final grade for that paper. You will not have a second chance on the final paper. Grading scale: 90-100 is an A; 80-89.99 is a B; 70-79.99 is a C; 60-69.99 is a D; below 60 is an F.
Attendance
In theory, you should never miss class. Because unexpected emergencies do arise, I will not deduct from your grade as long as you miss no more than four classes. After that, I will deduct from your class participation grade. A grade penalty will be assessed on late assignments and for being unprepared for a scheduled conference.
Academic Honesty Policy
Academic Honesty Policy: If I catch you cheating on a test, quiz, or paper, I will fail you for the course and report your name to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Please see the page on plagiarism.
